Since I was a kid, I've always loved cute things and it's been my dream for a long time to be able to share this side of me with similar minds. During March 2022, I became so tired of the projects I was doing - it was more on the traditional, formal side of art and design. It was time for a much overdue change.
One inspirational shower later, I came up with an idea that combined so many of my old interests: kawaii/chibi art, adventure video games, writing stories and characters. I then realised, that I still feel so connected to these today, I haven't felt so consistantly motivated to create in years. Somewhere along the way, I had just gotten caught up in trying to be 'an adult'.
'Sando + Friends' draws inspiration from a surprisingly big list of things. These span childhood and growing up, to my experience in university while studying design. If you haven't heard of any of the things below, I highly recommend you check them out! And let me know if you do!
Animations: The work of Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Hosoda, especially Nausicaä (1984), Laputa (1986), Totoro (1988), Summer Wars (2009) and Belle (2021); Netflix's Hilda (2018)
Video Games: Drawn To Life (2007); The Legendary Starfy (2008); Tamagotchi and other similar 2000s games; Animal Crossing (New Leaf, 2012); Stardew Valley (2016)
Design: isometric perspective; architectural, spatial, graphic, game and concept design; frame animation
And there's probably more that I'll have to add later because they've unknowingly become part of me and I can't remember them. :)
As of September 2022, I opened a tiny stationery shop, based off the 'souvenir shop' in Pepper Point. Each item is designed by me, some handmade, and are a way for fans (aka 'residents' or 'visitors' to the town) to have a piece of Pepper Point - the same reason you would take home a souvenir when you go on a holiday. This concept gives the store and items a deeper meaning. It's more than having cute decorative objects and art - every design has a story behind it!
